11-Day Tour of Papua New Guinea

The New Guinea Explorer takes the intrepid explorer on a journey through Papua New Guinea, traversing the massive Central Ranges, visiting ancient cultures, and seeking exotic animals. Discover the extraordinary Melpa people of the Wahgi Valley, explore the wonders of the remote Sepik River, seek the incredible Ribbon-tailed Bird of Paradise and shake hands with a Huli warrior. The New Guinea Explorer program is sure to satiate the appetite of those who wish to explore this wild and exotic land.

Day 1:  Arrive Port Moresby then flight to Mt. Hagen: Welcome to Papua New Guinea. On arrival, you will be assisted in connecting the flight to Mt Hagen.

RONDON RIDGE – 7100 feet above sea level, on the outer fringes of the Kubor Range, lies Rondon Ridge. Boasting panoramic views of the Wahgi Valley below

Day 2: Rondon Ridge: Comprehensive touring program takes you through the traditions and customs of the Melpa People. First contact with the Melpa was made in the mid-1930’s. The Melpa people are “true farmers” that still maintain traditional farming methods that can be traced back 9,000 years. The surrounding area is pristine rainforest and home to numerous orchid species. The lodge has hours of walking trails providing ample opportunity to explore the unique ecology of this area. Over 180 species of birds have been recorded in the rainforest around Rondon Ridge including ten species of Bird of Paradise. All nature and birding walks are accompanied by experienced and knowledgeable nature guides.

Day 3: Charter flight to Sepik: Charter flight to Sepik and board SEPIK SPIRIT

Day 4: Inle Lake – Heho – Mandalay: Fly to Mandalay. Rest of the day at leisure.

Day 5: Mandalay: First, cross a bridge over the Irrawaddy River to Sagaing. Covered with 600 white-painted pagodas and monasteries, Sagaing Hill is widely regarded as the religious center of Myanmar. Visit a local market. A short ferry ride and then horse cart ride to visit old wooden Bagaya Monastery. On the way back visit Amarapura the city of immortality. Enjoy sunset at the iconic U Bein Bridge.

Day 6: Mandalay – Bagan: From the Mandalay jetty board, a private local boat for a 1-hr cruise on the Irrawaddy River to Mingun where see the Mingun Bell which, weighing in at more than 90 tons, is considered the world’s largest uncracked ringing bell. Later fly to Bagan.

Day 7: Bagan: From an elevated viewpoint with spectacular views over the surrounding plains see the grandeur and scope of Bagan’s architecture. Next continue to Ananda Temple, one of the most revered temples in Bagan.

Day 8: Bagan – Yangon – Home: Morning optional hot air balloon ride over the hundreds of temples. Fly Bagan to Yangon and begin your return journey home.
